其功能與連詞十分相似,現歸納如下：

　　1、跟名詞

　　I give him advice instead of money.給了他忠告而沒有給他錢。

　　2、跟代詞

　　Will you go to the party instead of me?你代我去赴宴，好嗎？

　　3、跟形容詞

　　Things are now better instead of worse.情況不是更壞，而是更好了。

　　4、跟副詞

　　He walks slowly instead of quickly.他走得慢，而不是快了。

　　5、跟動詞（短語）

　　That increased instead of decreased our courage.那不但沒有減弱反而增強了我們的勇氣。一般來說,instead of不能直接接動詞的.從語法角度來說,這種用法是錯誤的.

　　6、跟動名詞（短語）

　　We should encourage them instead of throwing cold water on them.我們應該鼓勵他們而不是對他們潑冷水。

　　7、跟動名詞復合結構

　　They must make up their own minds instead of our making their minds for them.

　　他們應當自己下決心而不是我們替他們下決心。

　　8、跟介詞短語

　　He laughed with (us) instead of at us. 他跟我們一起笑，并不是嘲笑我們。

　　9、跟（to do）不定式（短語）

　　I went to borrow a book instead of to buy one.我去借了一本書，而不是買了一本書。

　　10、跟從句

　　He describes it as he saw instead of as it was.他是按他們看到的樣子而不是按其本來的面目來描述的它。
